#119 – my oldest friend

By ratanaong

Standing next to my oldest friend somehow makes me a wee bit smaller. It must have been his height. Tall and handsome holding out enough to occupy the space between us. He has standby me since I was born and had never left me on my own. Yes, the environment may be a bit harsh. He could be strict but had taken care of me well by shielding me when the needs arises. We lived in a natural surronding in the tropics. Come rain or shine, he  will continue to standby me, rush in and providing the brotherly protection against nature’s harsh treatment of us. My fear of animals is well known. He knew and had always taken the trouble to fend for me by providing the hiding place for them.

Yet, it was slowly been disturbed by the irresponsible people when they bypass us. Some simply treated us like a twin to be stared at and act as a resting place. We do sometimes stared back at these people as they littered all over the place without due respect for us nor cleaning up. Though I enjoyed another group of people dropping by to clear the litter willingly and happily. What a contrast I thought.

Then one day, what happened really saddened me. I heard engine sound. I turned and observed that my oldest friend was in pain. He knew his time had come. He mumbled through the noise, as if to say “Brother, take care of yourself! Be brave, you’ve grown so much and should be able to look after yourself. Good bye!” I heard a cracking sound and in a split second, he fell. His hundred feet mass slam right across the forest floor. “Bye my old friend.” I said as I shed silent tears.
